The information listed through-out this web site is to help aid you in planning your vacation. Please follow up on dates, and times as some businesses & area activities are seasonal and subject to change.
Shuttle service - From the Rockwood docks To Mt. Kineo. During the summer the shuttle runs every hr starting at 8am. In September the shuttle runs every odd hr starting at 9am. In October things start to wind down and the shuttle is by call only. Keep in mind there is a sub shop open at Mt. Kineo. Please call ahead for a current schedule in case of changes. (207) 534-9012.
Fly fishing - This area is a fly fisherman’s paradise.
Whether you try it on your own or schedule a guide to share with you the best area sports and techniques. Near by rivers which would include but not limited to, Moose river, West outlet, East outlet. For a Registered Maine guide, try munstersguideservice.com.
Whitewater Rafting - May we suggest Moxie outdoor adventures or Wilderness expeditions for your exciting guided tour down one of these rivers. The Kennebec, Penobscot, Dead river. Visit moxierafting.com or birches.com.
Hiking - The 2 hour hike up Mt. Kineo with it’s 700 ft. vertical drop deep into the lake below makes for a special day. Mt. Kineo bridle trail is a less steep alternative to the Indian Trail for hikers 0.7 miles to the intersection with Indian 1.1 miles to summit. The North trail extends 1.9 miles over the NE slope of Kineo connecting the summit to hardscrabble point. The Carriage trail runs 2.2 miles along the west shore of the peninsula from Hardscrapple point to the lake shore. For the more rigorous hiker you may want to try the 8-10 hr hike Mount Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak.
Seaplane rides - Take off in a vintage seaplane across the lake to tour the area or see some wildlife. Rides can be anywhere from ½ hr to a 4 hr tour. You may also be flown to a remote pond for a picnic lunch, fly fish, or canoe. Don’t forget about Greenville’s Sea Plane fly in, the world's largest fly in. Always held the weekend after Labor Day. There are always plenty of food vendors, craft exhibits, and thousand of spectators that attend.

Golfing - Enjoy one of Moosehead lake regions two golf courses while you are here. In Rockwood at Mt. Kineo or at Squaw village in Greenville. There is also a driving range in Greenville at the Trailside Restaurant open to the public.
Moose Safaris - Whether you choose one of the area's Guided pontoon excursions or take a ride in your own vehicle in search of moose or other wildlife this is sure to be a fun filled trip. Don’t forget your camera for that perfect shot. birches.com
Swimming - You may swim at our docks located just across the street, or take your boat over to Pebble Beach.
Boating - If you would like to explore the lake on your own you could rent a boat at the nearby Moosehead Marina. This is when you’ll begin to realize just how big and breathtaking Moosehead lake really is! Ride to Pebble Beach and swim for a while, then motor past the plummeting cliffs of Mount Kineo, and dock for lunch on Island. Play a round of golf and head back out for more boating, water skiing, or exploring. Truly, this will be a day you will not forget.
Kayaking/Canoeing - If you are feeling adventurous and want to head out for a drive to a remote pond, may we suggest Fitzgerald Pond or pack a picnic lunch and stop on one of the many islands or the shorelines of Moosehead Lake. You may put a Kayak or canoe in at our docks.
Fall foliage - Is truly a must see in the Moosehead Lake region. The view from our motel makes this picture perfect for any vacationer.
Snowmobiling - Ride the groomed interconnecting trail system for hundreds of miles and start right out your doorstep at the Moosehead Motel. Riders from around the country say it is hard to beat the beauty and widely groomed trails found here in Rockwood and surrounding areas. Rockwood sits in the heart of it all.

Downhill skiing - Squaw Mt. Resort has beautiful trails and no lift lines; this makes for a wonderful family filled day.

Ice Fishing - During the months of January thru March Moosehead offers some of the finest ice fishing around. This is a great sport for everyone. Maynard’s does have ice houses for rent. If you would like reserve one please call them at (207) 534-7703.
The ice races are held at the junction cove in Greenville during the winter months. Listed below are some other area events.
January - Ricky Craven snowmobile ride for charity
February - Blue Ridge riders snowmobile club activities on Saturdays.
March - Rockwood’s annual fishing derby & the Kineo challenge cross country ski race.
April - Ice out and mud season begins.
May - Salmon fishing at the rivers are at their best, The Fred Reckard’s canoe race, The Cystic Fibrosis walk, and this is a great time to go fiddle-heading. Our black fly season begins.
June - Good moose & deer spotting, Tour de Moose Bike Races, Moosehead Rowing Regatta, white-water rafting.
July - July 4th celebrations and chicken barbecue in Rockwood, a rubber duck race on the Moose River, antique boat show at the Marina,
August - Golf tournament at Mt. Kineo, Forest Heritage days, and wild berry picking.
September - Bear Hunting begins, along with fall foliage, The annual cystic fibrosis pig roast and raffles begins labor day weekend at Maynard’s. The international seaplane fly in is the 2nd weekend in Sept., There is a one week Moose hunt held in September.
October - Indian summer, bird hunting, and our last moose hunt week. Warm days with cool nights. Every Sunday for the month of October Maynard’s hosts there annual turkey shoot. The proceeds goes to Cystic Fibrosis.
November - Hunting would include bird, deer, coyote, and bear.
